Common? More Like Complicated.
Okay, so I did a search. "Common." And what a freakin' rabbit hole that is.
Common Ground? More Like a Minefield.
You get the usual suspects: "common app," "common sense," "common law." All things that are supposedly, you know, common. Supposed to be easily understood, accessible to everyone. Right. Let's be real.
The "common app" is a prime example. For those blissfully unaware, it's supposed to streamline college applications. One form, send it everywhere. Sounds great in theory. But have you seen that thing? It's a labyrinth of essays, recommendations, and transcripts. "Common" my ass. More like "commonly stressful and confusing." And don't even get me started on the essays...
Then there's "common sense." Ah, yes, the most uncommon thing of all. Everyone thinks they have it, but judging by the state of, well, everything, it's clearly in short supply. It's like saying water is wet, when everyone's running around with their hair on fire. Is it really that common? I'm starting to think it's a superpower only a select few possess.
And "common law"? Don't even get me started. I'm no lawyer, offcourse, but from what I gather, it's a bunch of precedents and rulings that have built up over centuries. So, to understand it, you have to become a historian, a detective, and a mind reader all rolled into one? Sounds pretty "common" to me.

The Illusion of Shared Understanding
The search results keep going: "common meaning," "common good," "common sense media"... It's all designed to make you think we're all on the same page, working towards the same goals. But are we? Seriously, are we?
"Common good" is another one that makes my blood boil. Whose "good" are we talking about here? The corporations raking in billions while the planet burns? The politicians lining their pockets while the middle class gets squeezed dry? Give me a break. It's a nice-sounding phrase that gets thrown around a lot, but it rarely reflects reality. It's like a unicorn farting rainbows – theoretically possible, but highly unlikely to witness in real life.
And "common ground"? Please. In this day and age, finding common ground is like searching for a needle in a haystack... made of other needles. Everyone's so entrenched in their own echo chambers that any attempt at genuine conversation just devolves into shouting matches.
The Bottom Line? It Ain't So Simple.
The more I look at this list, the more I realize that "common" is a deceptive word. It implies simplicity, accessibility, shared understanding. But the reality is far more complex. It's a word used to mask the underlying chaos and confusion of modern life.
"Common cold," "common side effects," "common last names"... Even these seemingly straightforward terms have hidden depths. The "common cold" has eluded a cure for centuries. "Common side effects" are often anything but pleasant. And "common last names" can be traced back to fascinating and often turbulent histories. So what is common?
Then again, maybe I'm being too cynical here. Maybe there's still some hope for shared understanding, for a sense of community. But honestly... I'm not holding my breath.
So, What's the Real Story?
It's all a giant, messy, complicated joke. We pretend things are simple and shared, when in reality, everyone's just fumbling around in the dark, trying to make sense of it all. The word "common" is just a band-aid on a gaping wound of misunderstanding.
